Posted on 10 Sep 2011

Lotus CEO Ming-Chung Wong was awarded a Grand Challenges Explorations Grant in the amount of US$100,000 for ground-breaking research in global health and development.

Lotus Innovative Health announces that its CEO, Mr. Ming-Chung Wong, is a Grand Challenges Explorations winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  Mr. Wong is pursuing an innovative global health and development research project entitled, "The Lotus Throne: The Self-Cleaning Solution to Sanitation".

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) funds scientists and researchers worldwide to explore ideas that can break the mold in how we solve persistent global health and development challenges.  Ming-Chung Wong's project is one of over 85 Grand Challenges Explorations Round 6 grants announced on April 28th, 2011 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

"GCE winners are expanding the pipeline of ideas for serious global health and development challenges where creative thinking is most urgently needed.  These grants are meant to spur on new discoveries that could ultimately save millions of lives, " said Chris Wilson, director of Global Health Discovery at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

To receive funding, Mr. Wong and other GCE Round 6 winners demonstrated a bold idea in one of five critical global health and development topic areas: polio eradication, HIV, sanitation and family health technologies and mobile health.  Applications for Grand Challenges Explorations Round 8 opened in September 2011.

Our idea for the next generation of sanitation technology has its foundation in a concept that has occurred naturally for more than two thousand years, known as the "lotus effect".  We proposed the development of a novel self-cleaning toilet based on the lotus effect that will utilized UV-resistant, superhydrophobic silica coatings that have recently been developed.  This new self-cleaning system will not require water and will therefore minimize waste water while also increasing sanitary conditions in toilets.  Successful development of this project would be invaluable to further the development of countries in the emerging world.

Mr. Ming-Chung Wong is the Chief Executive Officer of Lotus Innovative Health, Ltd. He has over 8 years of experience in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors. He has worked with several start-up biotechnology companies. Mr Wong has a B.S. degree in molecular biology and did his graduate studies at UC San Diego working under Dr. Tony Hunter at the Salk Institute. Mr. Wong also holds a MBA degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
